ELECTRONIC RESOURCES:  Books, Article Indexes, Streamed Videos

Find articles in journals, magazines and newspapers using these article indexes. Direct access for some of these databases is only available from NVIT, or by entering your library card number when prompted.

For databases indicated with "*",  searches off-campus have been enabled, you will be asked for your card number.

Ebrary  Search 75,000 electronic books online.

Article Indexes

*Academic Search Premier  Search here for an combined search of Ebsco databases.  If you search the databases separately, there are some special tools available, such as the ability to isolate one particular journal.  For Canadian journals try in addition Canadian Business and Current Affairs.

ACM Digital  ACM refers to the Association for Computing Machinery.  Bibliographic information, abstracts, reviews, and the full-text for articles published in ACM periodicals and proceedings since its founding in 1947 are available in the Digital Library, together with selected works published by affiliated organizations. The Database includes Doctoral Theses, Master's Theses, and Technical Reports.

Applied Science and Technology Index  Includes Applied Science & Technology Index, General Science Abstracts, Readers' Guide Abstracts, Art Index, General Science Index, Social Sciences Index, Biological & Agricultural Index (Plus), and the Humanities Index.

Alternate Health Watch  This database focuses on the many perspectives of complementary, holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness. It offers libraries full-text articles for more than 180 international (and often) peer-reviewed journals and reports. In addition, there are hundreds of pamphlets, booklets, special reports, original research and book excerpts.  Alternate HealthWatch provides in-depth coverage across the full spectrum of subject areas covered by complementary and alternative medicine.

Anthropological Index Online  This index is based on the journal holdings of The Anthropology Library at The British Museum (Museum of Mankind) which receives periodicals in all branches of anthropology, from academic institutions and publishers around the world.

*Art Index  Indexes Art, Architecture, and Urban Planning journals .

Bibliography of Native North Americans  The Bibliography of Native North Americans (BNNA) covers all aspects of Native North American culture, history, and life. This resource covers a wide range of topics including Archaeology, Multicultural Relations, Gaming, Governance, Legend, and Literacy. BNNA contains more than 122,000 citations for books, essays, journal articles, and government documents of the United States and Canada. Dates of coverage for included content range from the sixteenth century to the present.

*Biological/Agricultural Index  Indexing and some full-text for journals in the fields of Biology and Agriculture (73 full text titles).

Biomedical Reference Collection Provides managers and clinical researchers in industries such as bio-pharmaceutical, medical device manufacturing, biogenetics and public health with access to more than 1,050 full-text journals.

*BC Statistics  Has the provincial government's largest concentration of statistical products, services and expertise.  Most of the information is public and under the "BC Stats" option. Current statistics and a host of other information is available under "BC Stats-Secure".

*Business Source Premier  The industry's most popular business research database which includes the full-text for more than 2,300 journals.  Business Source Premier provides full-text back to 1965, and searchable cited references back to 1998.

*Canadian Almanac and Directories  Contains a wealth of contact, biographical, statistical, business, and cultural information about Canada.  

*Canadian Business and Current Affairs  Web access to the major index for Canadian newspapers, popular and business magazines, and scholarly journals; comprehensive coverage of Canadian topics, including Business, Politics, Literature, History, and News Events (1982 - present); with some full-text.

    Online Inter-Library Loan ordering.

Canadian Native Law Cases Index to the 9 volume set contains all reported Canadian court decisions, as well as those that went to the Privy Council on appeal from Canada.  Also available in hard copy at the NVIT Library as "Canadian Native Law Reporter".

*Canadian Newsstand  New interface to 12 Canadian daily newspapers, including the Vancouver Sun and The Province, as well as other Canadian news sources.  The older interface available until the summer as

Canadian News Disk.

*Canadian Reference Centre  Canadian Reference Centre combines Canadian magazines, newspapers, newswires and reference books to create the largest collection of regional full text content available to Canadian libraries. This database includes leading Canadian periodicals and international (U.S. and U.K.) periodicals in full text; full text reference books; 84,774 full text biographies and an Image Collection of 400,972 photos, maps and flags.   

*Canadian Research Index  This is an excellent resource for hard to find Canadian government reports, Canadian theses, Stats Canada data, and research publications.  Perform a word search, then select AND and narrow your hit list effectively.  Their main website gives more information about the database.

CINAHL Full Text  This is the world's most comprehensive source of full text for nursing & allied health journals, providing full text for more than 600 journals indexed in the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature.

CISTI Indexes  Contains National Research Council full-text journals in the fields of: Biology, Zoology, Botany, Cell Biology, Geotechnics, Canadian Geographical, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Earth Sciences, Fisheries, Aquatic Sciences, Microbiology, Physics, Physiology, Forest Research, and Zoology.  Select the journal of choice (or select all journals) and search for full text articles.

*Clinical Pharmacology 

* Consumer Health Complete  Consumer Health Complete™ (CHC) is the single most comprehensive resource for consumer-oriented health content. This full text database covers topics such as aging, cancer, diabetes, drugs & alcohol, fitness, nutrition & dietetics, children's health, men & women's health, etc. CHC offers a unique search interface designed to call attention to the full text content available from many important source-types, and to provide an intuitive means for searching this specific information.

*Encyclopedia of British Columbia 

*ERIC  Access to the Resources in Education (RIE) file of document citations and the Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE) file of journal article citations from over 750 professional journals; also includes over 850 ERIC Digest records that feature the full text of the original document; ERIC Thesaurus is available as a menu option on the search screen. 1966 - the present.

EBMR  A definitive resource for electronic information in the evidence based medicine (EBM) movement that combines 7 of the most trusted EBM resources into a single, fully-searchable database. 

 

 

 

 

First Nations Periodical Index  An index to twenty (20) journals of significance for those doing Native Studies. Orientation is more towards Plains First Nations, but there is much material useful anywhere. Titles not in this library will have to be obtained through inter-library loans.

 

 

Forest Enviroviews  Includes hundreds of provincial and federal acts and regulations, bills or the BC legislature, policy manual of the provincial legislature, RIC manuals, guidebooks, association of BC professional foresters information, case summaries and tribunal decisions provided by Mair Jensen Blair, and historical versions of Forest Enviroviews back to 1995.  Accessible at the moment only from NVIT computers.

General Science Index  Indexes journals from a wide range of scientific disciplines.

GovInfo  A UBC index to Canadian and Canadian provincial information on the web.  Provides government databases, directories, reports, statistics, statutes & more. 

Government of BC Index  Links to many publications of the BC Government, many of which are available full-text.  Others will be purchased as necessary by the NVIT library for our students. 

*Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition  Provides over 520 scholarly full-text journals focusing on many medical disciplines.  Also featured are abstracts and indexing for over 560 journals.  

*Health Source: Consumer Edition  With Health Source: Consumer Edition you can search for information on many health topics including the Medical Sciences, Food Sciences and Nutrition, Child Care, Sports Medicine and General Health.  Health Source: Consumer Edition features searchable full-text for nearly 165 journals including Consumer Reports on Health and Men’s Health, as well as abstracts and indexing for nearly 180 general health, nutrition and professional health care publications.

Humanities and Social Sciences Index  Web access to many periodicals found on the Humanities Index (above) and the Social Sciences Index (below).

*Ingenta Reveal

LWW Total Access Collection   The LWW Total Access Collection is a complete collection of over 200 journals that cater to your intensive medical information needs

 *Masterfile Premier  Designed specifically for public libraries, MasterFILE™ Premier contains full text for nearly 1,750 periodicals covering general reference, business, health, education, general science, multicultural issues and much more. This database also contains full text for nearly 500 reference books, 86,017 biographies, 105,786 primary source documents, and an Image Collection of 400,972 photos, maps & flags.

Medline with Full Text   Online database of 11 million citations and abstracts from health and medical journals and other news sources. Bibliographic information that is key to health professionals. 

National Film Board Titles  

 ProMedline with Full Textfessional Development Collection   Professional Development Collection™ provides a highly specialized collection of electronic information especially for professional educators, professional librarians and education researchers. This collection offers information on everything from children's health and development to cutting-edge pedagogical theory and practice. Professional Development Collection includes full text for Chronicle of Higher Education, Educational Leadership, Journal of Education, Journal of Higher Education, Journal of Learning Disabilities, Theory Into Practice, and nearly 520 high quality education journals. This database also contains more than 200 educational reports.

 

PsycARTICLES A definitive source of searchable full text articles on current issues in psychology. The PsycARTICLES database covers general psychology and specialized, basic, applied, clinical and theoretical research in psychology. It contains more than 25,000 searchable full text articles from 38 journals published by the American Psychological Association and 4 from allied organizations. It contains all journal articles, letters to the editor and errata from each of the 42 journals

PsycInfo  The essential psychology tool for researchers, practitioners, and students in numerous disciplines,PsycINFO® is an abstract database that provides systematic coverage of the psychological literature from the 1800s to the present.

 *Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature Abstracts  Web access to indexing and abstracting from more than 230 of the most popular general-interest magazines published in the US and Canada; a comprehensive index to popular literature, covering General News, Current Events, Business, Fashion, Politics, Crafts, Food, Education, Sports, History, and Science. 

Social Sciences Index  A Wilson index that cites articles from 415 English-language periodicals published in the United States and elsewhere. Coverage includes a wide range of inter-disciplinary fields (including Psychology, Anthropology, Political Science, Sociology, Social Work, Economics, and Women's Studies) in a broad array of social sciences journals.

Stats Canada (E-STAT)  Census and other statistical data on Canada.  Access is automatic while at NVIT, when at home click on Estat at home, then enter your Moodle ID and password.  Finally, click on the "Estat" box.
