ABEABC Bursary
$100

 

  • Awarded to a full-time student in Developmental Studies (College Readiness, Bridging to Trades or Employment Skills) who left school without completing grade 11, demonstrates excellence and outstanding progress, puts forth their best effort and is a role model for other students, demonstrating leadership skills and being a good team member.
  • This award is sponsored by the Adult Basic Education Association of British Columbia.

BCASW Bursary
$250

  • Awarded to a full-time 3rd year Bachelor of Social Work student who is a BCASW member. The student is active in school affairs, demonstrates class participation and leadership skills, shows strong academic performance demonstrates financial need and shows outstanding achievement. 
  • this award is sponsored by the British Columbia Association of Social Workers.
  • The deadline to apply for BCASW Membership is Jan 30. Once membership has been established, students do not need to apply for the BCASW bursary; departments will automatically determine the recipient. 
  • Student Members Enjoy Additional Benefits: Students completing their social work degree program can join BCASW at a special student rate of $66 per year. Your student membership qualifies you to apply for the BCASW Scholarship awarded annually to a student member in each school of social work in BC. Following graduation, to encourage your continuing membership, BCASW will reduce the regular membership fee by 40% the first year and 20% the second.

Campus Living Centres Bursary
$250

  • Awarded to a full-time outstanding student from any program at the Merritt campus who can demonstrate his or her contribution in student life at NVIT through direct involvement in at least 2 of the following areas: a) social activites organized through recognized student bodies such as student governments, clubs and formalized residence groups; b) sporting activies such as intramurals, varsity athletics, and residence organized events; or c) academic and educational activities such as tutoring, organized study groups, educational campaigns, and fundraising initiatives.
  • The student must reside in a residence managed by Campus Living Centres.
  • The student must have maintained a C+ (65%) average or better in the year in which they apply.
  • Students who are employed by Campus Living Centres are not eligible.
  • This award is sponsored by Campus Living Centres.

FORED Bursary
$500

  • Awarded to a full-time Aboriginal student in the Natural Resource Technology program at the Merritt campus who writes a short essay on Traditional Ecological Knowledge.
  • This award is sponsored by FORED BC.
  • Students must submit a short paragraph (one-page maximum) that is typed and double-spaced on how Traditional Ecological Knowledge may be or has been applied to natural resources management in their territory, community or Band decision-making. This can be an oral story/family anecdote, traditional practice, research, or other, as long as it relates to any aspect of the environment or natural resources practices in fisheries, wildlife, mining, forestry, agriculture, oil and gas, archaeology, parks, recreation/tourism or other. 
  • Applicants should include a title page stating the award name, their full name, band affiliation if possible, age and email/phone for contact and award notification. If applicants wish to include photos or web links etc. of traditional knowledge topics in support of their application, they may feel free to do so. All submissions should be checked for spelling and grammatical errors.
  • The deadline to submit the Traditional Ecological Knowledge submission is the last day of February. All submissions must be handed into the Financial and Academic Planner.

George Collins Memorial Scholarship
$1000

  • Awarded to a full-time Aboriginal graduating student in a Health Studies program (Home Support Resident Care Attendant, Access to Practical Nursing and Chemical Addiction Worker) who is a member of one of the Coldwater, Nooaitch or Shackan bands and demonstrates academic excellence. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.00 
  • Should there be two or more students with the same highest GPA, the departments will determine the recipient based on citizenship. 
  • Note: In the event there is not a successful candidate from the eligible communities and programs mentioned above, and upon approval from the Scw’exmx Community Health Services Society, the award may be presented to graduates from other Nicola Valley bands and/or graduates from the Bachelor of Social Work Degree and Aboriginal Early Childhood Education programs.

      • Awarded to a full-time graduate student in a 100-level or higher certificate program who is enrolled in an 80% course load with the highest grade point average. (A minimum grade point average of 3.0 must be attained to be eligible.)
      • This award is sponsored by NVIT’s administrative staff from both campuses.

      NVIT Administrative Staff Matching Award-Diploma
      $400

      • Awarded to a full-time graduate student in a 200-level or higher diploma program who is enrolled in an 80% course load with the highest grade point average. (A minimum grade point average of 3.0 must be attained to be eligible.)
      • This award is sponsored by NVIT as a matching bursary for the NVIT Administrative Staff-Certificate bursary. (NVIT matched the funds raised by the NVIT Administrative Staff to allow a second award.) 
      • Students do not need to apply; departments will automatically determine the recipient.

      NVIT Elders’ Council Bursary
      $500

      • Awarded to a part-time, 1st year student in any program from the Merritt campus based on demonstrated financial need, academic achievement and performed community service.
      • The recipient will be required to attend the first NVIT Elders’ Council meeting in September to introduce himself/herself to the NVIT Elders’ Council. 
      • Students must submit a budget statement and a 500-word typed, double-spaced essay (maximum) on why the applicant is going to school part-time; what program the applicant  would like to graduate from (what the applicant would like to become after graduation [career]); demonstrated financial need; and performed community service. To be included, a title page named, “NVIT Elders’ Council Bursary”; stating the date and year of the essay submission including the applicant's full name.
      • This award is sponsored by the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology Elders' Council-Merritt campus.
      • The deadline to submit the essay is May 10th. All essays must be handed into a Financial and Academic Planner.

      NVIT Leadership Award (There are six Leadership Awards to be chosen)
      $250

      • Awarded to a full-time student who demonstrates dedication while being an active leader in both, the NVIT internal and external communities.
      • The student must actively participate in his/her learning environment and be recognized for his/her effort to assist in the development of the communities.
      • The student must also maintain a 60% course load with a minimum 3.0 grade point average during the last twelve (12) months of study.
      • The student will be nominated by NVIT faculty and staff.
      • Once an applicant is nominated, the applicant will be required to write a 150-200 word typed, double-spaced essay on the detail of their dedication to the NVIT and external communities and the particiation of his/her learning environments.
      • The deadline to submit the NVIT staff/faculty nomination is April 20. The deadline for applicants to submit the essay is April 30. All nominations and essays must be handed into a Financial and Academic Planner. 
      • This award is sponsored by NVIT.

      NVIT Support Staff Bursary
      $130 [Varies]

      • Awarded to a full-time student in any program who demonstrates dedication to his studies, displays citizenship qualities, and has a friendly rapport with our support staff. The value of the award will vary based on donations made by the support staff.
      • The student will be nominated by NVIT support staff.
      • The deadline to submit the NVIT support staff nomination is March 31. All nominations must be handed into a Financial and Academic Planner.
      • This award is sponsored by the NVIT support staff.
      • Students do not need to apply; NVIT support staff will automatically determine the recipient.

      NVITEA Bursary
      $500

      • Awarded to a full-time student in any program registered in any year of studies from either campus who demonstrates academic excellence. The student will have the highest grade point average college-wide.
      • This award is sponsored by the Federation of Post Secondary Educators’ Local 19, named the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology Employees’ Association.
      • Students do not need to apply; departments will automatically determine the recipient.

      NVITEA Matching Bursary
      $500

      • Awarded to a full-time student in any program registered in any year of studies from either campus who demonstrates academic excellence. The student will have the second highest grade point average college-wide.
      • This award is sponsored by NVIT as a matching bursary for the NVITEA bursary. (NVIT matched the funds raised by the NVITEA to allow a second award.)
      • Students do not need to apply; departments will automatically determine the recipient.

      Pat Brownlee-Baker Memorial Scholarship
      $500 [Two scholarships will be awarded each academic year]

      • Awarded to an Aboriginal female student attending any program, in any level of studies, in full or part-time studies from either campus. Who was previously released from incarceration and demonstrates financial need.
      • If no students apply, the award will be opened to all Aboriginal female students.
      • This award is sponsored by John Brownlee-Baker, surviving husband of Pat Brownlee-Baker, an instructor at NVIT involved with the adult basic education program at various female correctional institutes. She aspired to see females get successfully back into society. 
      • Students must submit two instructor character reference letters to any Financial and Academic Planner, attesting to the students’ skills and abilities to be eligible for the scholarship.

      Robinson Financial Need Bursary
      $500

      • Awarded to a student from the Merritt campus who is of Canadian decent and demonstrates financial need.
      • This award is sponsored by the Robinson Family.
      • Students must submit an application and complete an annual budget statement.
      • All documentation can be picked up and submitted to any Financial and Academic Planner to be eligible for the bursary.
      • The deadline to submit the application and budget statement is March 31.

          Shulus Forest Enterprises Bursary
          $500

          • Awarded to a full-time Aboriginal student in the Natural Resource Technology program who is a member of one of the Indian Bands (Lower Nicola, Shackan, Nooaitch, Coldwater, Cook's Ferry, or Upper Nicola) based on academic achievement with financial need.
          • This award is sponsored by Shulus Forest Enterprises Inc.
          • Students do not need to apply; departments will automatically determine the recipient.

          SISCO Bursary
          $250

          • Awarded to a 1st year student in the Natural Resource Technology program entering the 2nd year of studies with the best overall marks in Soils and Hydrology, Silvics and Dendrology and Ecology. 
          • This award is sponsored by the Southern Interior Silviculture Committee. 
          • Students do not need to apply; departments will automatically determine the recipient.

          Student Society Emergency Aid Bursary (Bursaries are offered twice per year-Fall and Spring terms)

          up to $2000 [A successful candidate will vary, up to $500, based on each applicant’s individual need, academic standing and community or NVIT involvement.]

           

            • Awarded to a full-time student from any program who demonstrates financial need.
            • The applicant will be required to complete the application form provided by a Financial and Academic Planner.
            • The applicant must submit a listing of instructor signed average grade of marks (for new students only) as well as all sources of income during the study period. (If the student resides with a spouse, parents or other family members, their income must also be considered.) 
            • A recommendation letter must be written by an NVIT faculty or external community member, documenting the applicant’s community or NVIT involvement. The letter must describe citizenship qualities such as leadership roles, volunteer work with an organization/group or at NVIT and participation at student events.
            • The deadline to submit the application form and other documentation is October 31 (fall term) and/or February 28 (spring term). All documentation must be submitted to a Financial and Academic Planner.
            • The NVIT Student Society Emergency Aid Bursary Fund (SSEAF) was developed in 1987 to help ease the financial constraints of NVIT students while studying. Each year, the NVIT Student Society fundraises and donates $2000 to students from NVIT. The objective is to assist students in financial need that would otherwise have to postpone their studies at NVIT. The SSEAF operates as a matching program whereby the Ministry matches funds raised by the NVIT Student Society.

            UBC, Faculty of Forestry Bursary
            $500

            • Awarded to a graduating Aboriginal student in the Natural Resource Technology program with a high GPA planning on pursuing a degree in forestry. 
            • This award is sponsored by the University of British Columbia, Faculty of Forestry.
            • Students do not need to apply; departments will automatically determine the recipient.
